Welcome to the English Language Institute at Illinois State University!
Illinois State University's English Language Institute (ELI) provides the best of two worlds: a small-town setting and a study program that meets your educational needs. We are located in Normal, Illinois, close to Chicago, Peoria, St. Louis, and Springfield. Our Intensive English Program (IEP) focuses on practical learning and the special needs of adult language learners.
We follow a communicative approach to language learning. We believe the most natural way to learn a language is to use it. Along with courses in Reading/Writing and Speaking/Listening, the IEP offers a variety of electives to prepare students for academic language and to support social language learning. Our instructors have all completed advanced degrees in TESOL.
In addition to this, students have the opportunity to engage in a variety of activities that support language learning. We offer a Conversation Partners program in which students are paired with an ISU student and meet weekly for informal conversation. Students will also find support at the ELI Tutoring Center, where they can meet one-on-one with a tutor who is trained in second language learning.
There are also many opportunities for students to interact socially with ISU students. We offer a number of excursions and activities through I-House, in which students can participate. Students may also become involved in over 350 Registered Student Organizations, which include sports and clubs. Most of our students live in the university's campus housing, giving them a chance to interact with students of all backgrounds.
Finally, if you are interested in an undergraduate or graduate program at Illinois State University, you will receive support in identifying which programs are best for you as well as help with applying.
We are happy that you have chosen to continue your English language studies with us and look forward to meeting you on campus.
